LKAB Visitor Center

Koskullskulle, Sweden

Technology presents a warm visitor welcome in a cold, remote Scandinavian location.

CHALLENGE

Installing audiovisual in a visitor center in a remote northern location is no easy task, but international high-tech minerals group LKAB wanted to provide an informative and welcoming experience for visitors to its research center and nearby mine. LKAB mines and upgrades the unique iron ore of northern Sweden for the global steel market and its ambition is to be one of the industry’s most innovative, resource-efficient and responsible companies.

The visitor center team wanted to communicate the company’s scope and values to customers, VIPs, employees and visitors in an entertaining and engaging way. Working with LKAB’s consultants WSP, Electrosonic was responsible for designing and integrating audiovisual solutions for a boardroom and flexible presentation area seating up to 120 people. The solution had to be easy to control and manage, and capable of presenting different types of content and image sources, including video, high-resolution graphics and other presentation material.

A large videowall provides a highly visible welcome to visitors even during the Arctic winter.

SOLUTION

In the presentation area, a large videowall of almost 200 micro tiles creates an image area of 21 x 12 feet. An image processor configured for eight inputs and outputs ensures all images are displayed at full resolution and provides flexibility in image placement. An intuitive control system manages presentations and the comprehensive audio system. The boardroom features a series of LCD monitors divided by ultra-thin mullions.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Electrosonic’s experience in remote locations and hostile environments meant that it was business as usual for the integration team. The audiovisual system has met its goal of informing visitors in a unique and impressive way with presentations on LKAB’s performance in iron making and its global capability. The center makes a great starting point for tours of the mine itself — the world’s largest underground ironore mine.
