Immersive AV Connects Young People with Parliament and Democracy

Overview

The Parliamentary Education Centre opened its doors in 2015 as a new addition to the existing education facilities at the Palace of Westminster. The facility has been designed to introduce students between 5 and 18 years of age to parliament. Electrosonic was responsible for designing, installing and commissioning the AV system in the immersive space that recreates the virtual House of Lords and House of Commons chambers using 360 degree projection technology.

Challenge

Electrosonic was tasked with engineering an immersive experience that as near as possible recreates the feeling of standing in the centre of the chambers of the House of Lords and House of Commons.

Solution

Eight Optoma projectors are ceiling mounted to deliver a 360 degree continuous video display around the four walls of the room. Specialist edge blending software ensures that the projected images are seamlessly joined together so it feels as if you are actually standing in Parliament. The projected images are accompanied by an immersive soundtrack delivered by six powered loudspeakers. Visitors enjoy a 15-minute historical show, which
includes significant events such as when the suffragettes fiercely protested in the House of Commons. This is followed by an epic 60-minute virtual tour around Parliament.

All show content was produced by Centre Screen Productions. The Video Display Control Panel allows an instructor to select programming appropriate to the audience.

Impact

Students are immersed in a fast paced, learning experience, in which engaging content and spectacular visuals are woven into the AV to captivate the audience and stimulate debate and understanding.
