Medal-winning performances in audiovisual and interactive solutions tell the compelling story of the Olympic Games.

Citius, Altius, Fortius - Faster, Higher, Stronger. The motto of the Olympic Games and in many ways a summary of the project to refurbish the Olympic Museum. The vision, create an immersive, interactive multi-dimensional journey across the Olympic universe in four expanded floors and deliver in a tight unchangeable timeframe. The museum has three exhibition levels. ‘The Olympic World’ covers the origins of the Games, the Olympic torch and opening ceremonies. ‘The Olympic Games’ features exhibits on the Summer Games, Winter Games, Paralympics and Youth Olympics. ‘The Olympic Spirit’ has displays of Olympic medals as well as audio of athletes’ accounts of their experience in the Games. All that covers a massive 3000 square feet, Technology plays a major role in telling the fascinating story of the Games through history and immersing the audience in the action. Projection mapping brings Olympic figures on ancient Greek vases to life. Augmented reality enables visitors to become part of the Olympic torch relay with images projected onto a large curtain beside the walkway. The torch itself comes to life with stylized projection of the lighting ceremony and the dancing flames.

Giant panoramic displays track the timeline of the Olympics from its ancient origins through the revival to modern times. Visitors can experience the full sweep of Olympic history or experience a period of their choice using touchscreens. Surround screens and multimedia images immerse visitors in the action while close-up imagery and edge blended projection take visitors even closer to the action to recreate the drama of Olympic finals in another panoramic display. The sheer scale of the museum can be overwhelming but the organizers have made extensive use of interactivity to let visitors tailor their tour to their personal areas of interest. This is a gold medal winning tribute to one of the greatest sporting events on the planet.


The technology driving exhibits in the Olympic Museum represents a major installation. In equipment terms the design required almost 100 projectors, 150 screens including surround screens, 30 large-screen monitors, massive panoramic projection shows and many interactive terminals to enable visitors to tailor their experience. The large number of diverse screens and other audiovisual systems could have created compatibility and performance problems so it was essential to develop a consistent approach to overall system design. Show control had to be consistent throughout the four-level installation and it had to be integrated with building management systems to monitor compliance with Switzerland’s strict technical and energy-saving standards. That made it essential to develop a single cabling system that would carry video, audio and control signals to dedicated control rooms close to the exhibits. The individual control rooms also had to link to a master control center for overall performance monitoring and integration with the building management system. Consistent performance and reliability were critical. Easy, accessible monitoring and maintenance would be required to minimize downtime and reduce the risk of poor customer experience.

With a huge choice of content, interactive tables let visitors tailor their experience at the museum.


The scale, complexity and timescale of the installation meant that a single team working to consistent goals and standards was essential. Electrosonic took sole responsibility for audiovisual design engineering, integration and installation to meet technical and creative requirements on time. The results were stunning with multi-image content on surround screens, panoramic timelines, interactive tables and multi-channel audio creating seamless immersive environments that entertain and motivate visitors.


Delivering this project took great teamwork, experience and rigorous project management to coordinate so many diverse elements. The installation has performed reliably and meets Switzerland’s rigorous technical and energy conservation standards. The museum is one of Lausanne’s prime tourist sites attracting more than 250,000 visitors each year and winning a prestigious Grand Prix Avicom award for achievements by museums using new image and sound technologies.
